DURHAM, N.C. – Days after leading Davidson to its second straight league title, senior Viraj Garewal is one step closer to the U.S. Open as he carded a 4-under 68 Tuesday at Duke University Golf Club to advance to sectional qualifying.

One of five players to advance from his local site, the two-time all-conference performer was one-over through 13, before playing his last five holes in five-under highlighted by a pair of eagles.

“Coming into the back nine of the qualifier today, I remembered that anything could happen, especially at the finish,” Garewal commented. “I drew upon my strong finishing six holes of the A-10 Tournament just a couple days back and told myself that a great finish is possible.”

On Sunday, Garewal closed the final round of the 2022 Atlantic 10 Men’s Golf Championship with four consecutive birdies to finish third and help the Wildcats to their third crown in four appearances.

Sectional qualifying will take place June 6 at nine different sites within the United States.

Road to the U.S. Open
The process of determining the field of 156 players is a major undertaking. For the U.S. Open, it starts with almost 9,000 entrants and proceeds through two stages of qualifying, local and sectional. The USGA relies heavily on state, regional and foreign golf associations to conduct qualifiers within their jurisdictions.

Players who survive qualifying have a chance to play alongside the biggest names in golf on one of the game’s grandest stages.

The U.S. Open will be played June 16-19, 2022 at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass.
