Davidson College Presbyterian Church Hosts Steel Pan Workshop
Davidson College Presbyterian Church’s Music Ministry was thrilled to host Dr. Diana Loomer, Director of Appalachian State’s Steely Pan Band, and Morgan Tao, percussion instructor, on Sunday, July 10 for a Steel Pan Workshop.
Steel Pans are instruments created by youth in Trinidad and Tobago during the 1940’s when traditional drums were banned. The bottoms of oil drums were shaped with hammers to play certain musical pitches. Today, these instruments have made their way around the world and into all kinds of musical styles.
On Sunday afternoon, workshop participants learned steel pan history and techniques as well as four songs. As the sounds and rhythms filled the room, the joy of being connected to one another in this shared experience also filled the room. Playing together was a true display of the way God is at work in all of us bringing a variety of gifts together to make something beautiful. We truly made a joyful noise to the Lord. DCPC’s Music Ministry hopes to host Dr. Loomer and Mr. Tao next summer. If you are interested, contact Sarah Allred at DCPC for more information. [email protected]
