by | Oct 20, 2022

Davidson veterans are asked to attend a meeting at Town Hall on Oct. 25.

As announced at a recent Town Board Meeting, the Town is seeking input about the creation of a local Veterans’ Monument from local veterans.

The initial planning meeting will be held at Davidson Town Hall on Tuesday, October 25 at noon.

The Town Board resolution reads as follows:

RESOLUTION 2022-14
ENDORSEMENT OF TOWN OF DAVIDSON VETERANS MONUMENT INITIATIVE

WHEREAS, Veterans have been and will continue to be important to the Town of Davidson for their valor, bravery, and sacrifice during their years of service, their dedicated commitment to their community and their country, and their contributions and achievements before, during, and following their years of service; and

WHEREAS, The Town of Davidson does not have a monument to recognize the service of veterans in our community and wants to honor this significant group of individuals; and

WHEREAS, Town residents acknowledged the need for such a monument, and work began in a grassroots, veteran-led effort. The town thanks all those who have contributed to the Veterans Monument Initiative up to this point, and intends to keep the project as a veteran-led effort; and

WHEREAS, The Town of Davidson wants to build upon the foundation of the work that has begun to see the Veterans Monument Initiative come to fruition.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the Town of Davidson Mayor and Board of Commissioners do hereby endorse the Town of Davidson Veterans Monument Initiative. Town staff is directed to convene a meeting of engaged veterans and any other interested community members on Tuesday, October 25, 2022 at 12:00 p.m. in the Board Room at Davidson Town Hall to talk about the work to date and decide on a path forward.

  • The path forward will include a steering committee comprised of volunteers from this meeting.

  • The steering committee will recommend a monument rendering, site selection, and budget. Utilizing a starting budget of $25,000 from the Davidson Public Art Commission, any additional funds will need to be raised through private fundraising efforts by the committee.

  • Town staff will support the work of the committee, facilitate processes for accepting funds, and coordinate any required approvals.

  • The steering committee will report back to the Davidson Board of Commissioners in Spring 2023.

Adopted on the 27th day of September 2022.
