Cheer Squad Finishes Fifth at UCA Nationals
ORLANDO — After stringing together a pair of zero-deduction routines in the semifinals and finals of the UCA Cheerleading National Championship last weekend, the Davidson College spirit program took home fifth place in the Small CoEd Game Day Cheer Division for the second consecutive season.
“The 2022 championship was a first-time experience for the program,” said head coach Kaylee Smith. “There were limited expectations and struggles surrounding COVID and we finished in the top-5 in the nation out of 19 programs. The athletes this year were hungry to add more difficultly and compete two deduction free routines, leaving our final placement up to the judges. After the semifinals, we placed into finals at 10th place out of 24. After 2.5 hours of corrections, the team attacked finals with energy unlike anything we’ve ever seen.”
After finishing the semifinals with a score of 84.6 and in 10th place overall, the Wildcats regrouped in the finals and earned a score of 88.733 to jump five spots in the rankings and finish in fifth place.
“Finishing top-5 in the nation back-to-back makes this championship that much more special,” Smith added. “Our athletes represented the most diverse program with most having backgrounds that do not include cheerleading, gymnastics or dance. We are so proud of what we are able to do as cheerleaders and to represent Davidson College on the national stage.”
