Baseball Wins Season Opener

by | Feb 20, 2023

Senior Will Schomberg got the start for the ‘Cats, and this first pitch of the season was a strike.

DAVIDSON — Ryan Wilson and Jacob Hinderleider hit home runs, and the Wildcats held off a late threat to get by NJIT 4-3 in Friday evening’s season opener at Wilson Field.

Wilson’s three-run home run to right-center in the first inning gave the Wildcats the lead they never lost, while Hinderleider’s solo bomb to right in the fourth gave Davidson the final run it needed.

NJIT pulled within 4-3 on Kevin Putsky’s solo blast in the sixth and loaded the bases with one out in the ninth. That’s when Bennett Flynn forced a grounder to Hinderleider at shortstop, and the senior started a 6-4-3 double play — tossing to Jake Wilhoit, who fired to Wilson — to end it.

Flynn earned his first save of the year, after pitching the final three innings, allowing three hits and striking out two.

Will Schomberg got the start and earned the win. He threw five innings, allowed three hits and two earned runs and struck out six.

Wilson was the only Wildcat with multiple hits, adding a double in the sixth.
