Dionysia Theater Group is a student group at Davidson College. They are pleased to present The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

Dionysia was founded at Davidson several years ago but, according to one of its leaders, Breanna Suarez, “it fizzled out after Covid. I brought the club back! Last semester we did The Vagina Monologues and a 24 Hour Play Festival! This semester we are doing The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and an original student written play. Our hope is to bring more theatre to the college and the town!”

The play is about an eclectic group of six mid-pubescents, run by three equally quirky adults, who vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake.

Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee was nominated for 6 Tonys, winning 2 – including Best Book! You are definitely in for a treat, so come join us at the bee!! The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are all suppled by MTI.
