DavidsonLearns Presents William McCrea, Executive Director of North Carolina’s Tryon Palace

Explore Tryon Palace, the first permanent capital of the colony of North Carolina and the home of its first governor, William Tryon. Tryon Palace Executive Director, William J. McCrea, will discuss the history and the architecture of the original palace, the rebuilding of the palace in the 1950s, and the present-day activities available to visitors to the palace and its gardens. He will also address future plans for this historic site.

William McCrea

William McCrea has served as executive director of North Carolina’s Tryon Palace since January 2018. During his 40-year career with the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, he has held various other positions including: Director of Regional Museums; head of Architecture and Restoration for North Carolina State Historic Sites; and, associate director of the North Carolina Museum of History. He has also served on many boards and consulted with historical sites throughout the southeastern US.

Mr. McCrea graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst with a degree in art history and the University of Virginia with a master’s degree in architectural history and historic preservation.
