Women’s Basketball Knocks Off GW on the Road

Following the big win over GW the ‘Cats will honor their seniors Saturday afternoon.

 

WASHINGTON D.C. – Four Wildcats scored in double figures for the seventh time this season, as the Davidson women’s basketball team pulled out a second half comeback to defeat George Washington 66-59 in Atlantic 10 action on Wednesday night.

Suzi-Rose Deegan (16), Elle Sutphin (15), Mallorie Haines (12) and Tomisin Adenupe (11) each reached double-digits, as the ‘Cats improved to 6-7 in A-10 play. The win also makes Davidson 5-2 when four Wildcats reach double digits this season. 

The ‘Cats had their second-best rebounding game of the year on Wednesday, grabbing 40 total boards, led by eight from Adenupe and seven apiece from Haines and Deegan.

George Washington controlled the pace of the first half, making its way to the free throw line 10 times in the first while draining eight at the stripe, to pull ahead 34-29 at halftime.

Davidson bounced back in the third quarter, despite GW stretching to its largest lead of the night 38-31, just two minutes into the second half. With 7:44 to go in the frame, the Wildcats began a 7-0 run, solidified by Haines’ second three-pointer of the night, and tied the game up at 38-all. Over the final 4:59 of the quarter, Deegan and Sutphin each completed three-point plays that pushed Davidson ahead for the first time since the the 5:10 mark of the first quarter, and put the Wildcats ahead, 46-45, with 10 minutes left to play.

Adenupe scored Davidson’s first four points of the fourth quarter, going basket-for-basket with George Washington’s Nya Robertson to keep the game tied at 50-all. With three more makes at the line from Sutphin and Adenupe, plus a steal-turned fastbreak layup from Issy Morgan, the Wildcats stretched their lead to five with 5:33 to go. 

The Colonials had one more offensive spurt left before the buzzer, pulling ahead 59-58 with three minutes remaining, until Adenupe, Deegan and Haines combined for the game’s final seven points to ice out George Washington and secure the A-10 victory.

The Wildcats will return home for the regular season finale on Saturday, Feb. 25. Davidson will take on Fordham at 1 p.m. and celebrate Senior Day prior to tip off.
