Baseball Opens 3-Game Series With Lafayette Friday

by | Feb 23, 2023

Baseball is BACK! The Wildcats host a 3-game home stand this weekend.

The Davidson baseball team returns to the field Friday afternoon when it begins a three-game series with Lafayette.

Friday’s first pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.

The Wildcats enter 2-2 after dropping two of three games to NJIT last weekend and, most recently, defeating North Carolina A&T 15-1 on Tuesday night.

Davidson is playing its first eight games at home.

LATEST ON THE ‘CATS
The Wildcats’ bats heated up in Tuesday’s win in the form of 16 hits and back-to-back six-run innings in the sixth and seventh.

Through four games, first baseman Ryan Wilson leads the offense with a .545 average (6-for-11), a 1.957 OPS, two doubles, two home runs, nine RBIs and two stolen bases.

Tyler Douglas (6-for-17) and Jack Cotrone (3-for-8) are hitting .375, while Cotrone, Michael Carico and Jacob Hinderleider have homered.

Right-hander Will Schomberg will start his second straight series on the mound Friday. He enters with a 3.60 ERA and 1-0 record after tossing five innings and striking out six in last week’s win over NJIT.

Bennett Flynn (0.00 ERA, 3.0 IP, 1 save) leads a bullpen that has seven relievers with an 0.00 ERA.

SCOUTING THE LEOPARDS
Davidson leads the all-time series 18-8 and has won the last five meetings, including all three last March.

The Leopards enter 0-4, with all of the losses coming at Southeast Louisiana last weekend.

Despite the setbacks, the Leopards garnered two Patriot League weekly honors. Infielder Blaze Fadio was named Player of the Week after hitting .357 (5-for-14) with a home run, two doubles and three RBIs. Freshman catcher Ethan Swidler was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week, after going 3-for-6, hitting his first college home run and throwing out three would-be base-stealers.
