Reflecting on a Year of Resiliency – Ukraine Awareness and Fundraising Event
Davidson College’s Dean Rusk International Studies Program, the Department of Russian Studies, UCCA (Ukrainian Congress Committee of America) in Charlotte, and Davidson for Ukraine hosted an event at Davidson College’s Lilly Gallery on February 24 to commemorate the one-year anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and to raise money for medical supplies to be sent to Ukraine.
The event began with music, a welcome from Amanda Ewington, PhD, Chair, Russian Studies Department, Davidson College, and a moment of silence for the people of Ukraine. Speakers included two Davidson College students from Ukraine (both class of 2026), one of whom shared her story of fleeing Kyiv on the first day of the invasion and ultimately arriving in Davidson. The evening included taped remarks (in English) by a Ukrainian soldier and performances by recent Ukrainian refugees.
There was a buffet of delicious Ukrainian food along with vendors wearing traditional Ukrainian clothing.
From the UCCA in Charlotte:
“Thank you to everyone who attended, donated, or helped with our fundraising event last Friday. We were overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from people in our local community at the Reflecting on a Year of Resilience: Together for Ukraine and Democracy Event.
Thank you to Davidson College and Davidson for Ukraine for hosting and all the work and resources they dedicated to partner with us and make this event a success.
Together we raised over $32,000, all of which will be used to purchase ambulances and medical supplies for Ukraine.”
