March 24 @ 7:30 p.m.

Twenty-five years have passed since Matthew Shepard, a young, gay student at the University of Wyoming was kidnapped, severely beaten and left to die in a field under a blanket of stars. Five days later, when Matt passed away, the world watched and reacted, passing hate crime legislation at the state and federal level. We will sing Matthew’s story by performing Craig Hella Johnson’s oratorio, Considering Matthew Shepard. A compelling array of musical styles and texts from Hildegard of Bingen, Lesléa Newman, Michael Dennis Browne, and Rumi, passages from Matt’s personal journal, interviews and writings from his parents Judy and Dennis Shepard and newspaper reports, convey that light prevails over darkness and love over hate. Free and open to the public. Tickets are not required.
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof: Davidson Community Players
March 24 @ 8:00 p.m.
Armour Street Theatre
In a plantation house, a family celebrates the birthday of Big Daddy. The mood is somber because a number of evils poison the gaiety: greed/sins of the past/ desperate hopes for the future spar with one another as they learn that Big Daddy is dying. Maggie, Big Daddy’s daughter-in-law, wants to give him the news that she’s finally become pregnant by Big Daddy’s favorite son, Brick, but Brick won’t cooperate in Maggie’s plans & prefers to stay in a mild alcoholic haze. Maggie has her interests at heart in wanting to become pregnant but she also wants to make amends to Brick for an error in judgment that nearly cost their marriage. Swarming around Maggie and Brick are their intrusive, conniving relatives, all eager to see Maggie put in her place & Brick tumbled from his position of most-beloved son. By evening’s end, Maggie will set things right, & Brick’s love for his father will retrieve him from his path of destruction & return him, helplessly, to Maggie’s loving arms. Ages 14+

Been reading any manga lately? Come share with us what you’re reading, or maybe some of your favorites! We’re not a regular book club. We’re an “UnBook Club!” What’s an Unbook Club, you ask? We don’t all agree to read the same things. (After all, some like shojo more than shonen, or like the mecha genre more than the magical girls type. Some might even like both!) Here we all take turns sharing what we’re currently reading, give and ask for recommendations, and share our love of manga! We play games, make crafts, and hang out. Join us every last Thursday of the month at 4:30 p.m. in the community room. Looking for some manga to read? Check out our catalog and place a hold, or come explore our graphic novel section in the branch. Find a link to our catalog by clicking here.
