Fahey Nets Lacrosse Overtime Winner Against VCU
RICHMOND, Va. – Grace Fahey scored her second game-winning goal of the season on Wednesday afternoon to lift the Davidson Wildcats past VCU, 8-7, in overtime.
The ‘Cats led 7-6 with 25 seconds left in regulation before VCU’s Juliana George scored with 21 ticks on the clock to force the extra period. After winning the opening draw, the Wildcats turned possession over to the Rams until the 4:20-mark when Caroline Moran caused a turnover and earned the ball back for Davidson. Out of a Wildcat timeout, Julianne Carey ultimately fed Fahey, who scored from inside the 8-meter arc, to win it 8-7.
The victory improves Davidson to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play, and marks Davidson’s third one-goal game and second overtime battle this season.
Erin Cooke got the ‘Cats started early in Richmond, putting Davidson ahead 2-0 in the first 10 minutes of play thanks to a give-and-go pass from Shayna Brodman and a top-shelf goal at the 5:52-mark.
While the Rams tied it 2-all before the end of the first, Riley Cochrane responded in the second with a pair of goals, followed by Fahey’s first goal of the day, to push the Wildcats to a 5-3 lead heading into halftime.
VCU outscored Davidson 4-2 over the third and fourth periods, but Amanda Monahan came up with three point-blank saves during the fourth quarter to keep the game at bay. Overall, Monahan made a season-high 12 saves while Carey also won a season-best 12 draw controls.
Fahey ended the day with a hat trick, and Carey also dished three assists.
