Davidson Teen Wins $11,000 Aviation Scholarship

by | Apr 4, 2023

Cadet Captain Trevor Lee of Davidson

Statesville – Cadet Captain Trevor Lee of Davidson, NC has been a member of the Civil Air Patrol’s Iredell Composite Squadron for just over two and a half years. During this time, he has pursued various interests, including developing his skills in CAP’s emergency services’ mission and advancing his leadership skills. He is currently serving as the Cadet Deputy Commander for Support of his CAP squadron and the Deputy Commander for Operations for CAP’s Black Spade Wilderness School.

Now, thanks to an $11,000 scholarship from The Ray Foundation and Charlotte’s Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 309 Lee will have the opportunity to learn to fly.

C/Capt Lee is still working out the details for his flight training, but the goal of the scholarship is that he begin his training within sixty days and earn his private pilot’s license within the next year. Adding flight training into his already busy schedule will be challenging, but this will give him an opportunity to get a head start on his future goals. After graduating from high school, Lee plans to attend Liberty University to study aeronautics and then pursue a career in commercial aviation.

According to the EAA’s website, “The EAA Ray Aviation Scholarship is a scholarship program that is funded by the Ray Foundation, managed by EAA, and administered through the EAA Chapter network. Through the generous support of the Ray Foundation, EAA provides up to $11,000 to deserving youths to help cover their flight training expenses, totaling $1,800,000 in annual scholarship funding.”

At the Iredell Civil Air Patrol Squadron, cadets are encouraged to apply for opportunities like this; to date, Trevor Lee is the fourth Iredell Composite Squadron cadet to earn an EAA related scholarship in recent years. Two of the previous three cadets have already obtained their private pilot’s license.

The Iredell Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol meets weekly at the Statesville Regional Airport.
