by | Apr 10, 2023

Nick Calero celebrating a recent home run at Wilson Field.

FRIDAYNick Calero and Ryan Wilson hit back-to-back home runs to start the game, Will Schomberg tossed another gem, and the Davidson baseball team rolled to a 9-2 win over UMass Friday afternoon.

The Wildcats improved to 17-11 and 3-1 in Atlantic 10 play.

Calero’s lead-off home run on the game’s fourth pitch gave the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead, and Wilson followed with a solo blast of his own, his league-best 14th of the year.

Wilson finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs, adding a two-RBI double in a four-run fourth inning and an RBI-single in the fifth. Jacob Hinderleider hit the Wildcats’ third homer of the day, a two-run shot, in the fourth.

Calero had an RBI-single in the second, and Jake WIlhoit’s RBI-double to left in the eighth made it 9-2.

Schomberg (5-1) pitched the first seven innings, allowing six hits and one earned run and striking out four.

Nick Shedleski recorded the final six outs, allowing one hit and striking out one.

SATURDAY — Left-hander Ryan Feczko turned in one of his best outings of the season, and the Davidson baseball team held off a late UMass threat to earn a 4-3 victory Saturday afternoon and, with it, at least a second Atlantic 10 series win.

The win is the third straight for the Wildcats, who improved to 18-11 overall and 4-1 in the A-10.

Feczko (3-3) threw a season-high six innings and scattered three hits. He struck out six, including the side in the second inning, and retired eight straight batters from the second to fourth innings.

Feczko had early run support as second baseman Jack Cotrone drove in the game’s first two runs when he delivered the Wildcats’ fourth single of the first inning, scoring Ryan Wilson and Jacob Hinderleider.

The Wildcats extended their lead to 3-0 in the third when Wilson scored on an error following a Michael O’Shaughnessy single and to 4-1 in the ninth when Jake Wilhoitplated Cotrone on a sacrifice fly.

Bennett Flynn relieved Feczko to start the seventh inning and struck out five in 2.2 innings. AJ Pabst entered in the ninth, with the bases loaded and two outs, and recorded the final out, a flyout to Wilson in center, to earn his first save.

SUNDAY — Davidson scored 12 runs over the final four innings Sunday afternoon and rolled to a 14-6 win over UMass in Atlantic 10 play.

It’s the fourth straight win for the Wildcats, who improved to 19-11 overall and 5-1 in the league. Davidson has also won 11 of its previous 12 games.

Jake Wilhoit and Henry Koehler homered in the third and sixth innings, respectively, and the Wildcats overcame a 4-3 deficit with a six-run seventh.

Seven Wildcats drove in runs Sunday, led by Michael O’Shaughnessy, who had four RBIs. Koehler finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Wilhoit was 2-for-5 and drove in three. Nick Calero (3-for-5) and Jacob Hinderleider (2-for-5) also had multiple hits.

Starter Jacob Peaden threw three innings, allowing six hits and one earned run and striking out three. Isaac Fix (2-0) recorded the next nine outs, surrendering four hits and one earned run and striking out one.
