THREE-PEAT! Golf Wins Third Straight A-10 Title; Heffner Individual Medalist

‘Cats win the A-10 Championship for the third year in a row.

 

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – In addition to Davidson capturing its third consecutive Atlantic 10 Men’s Golf Championship and fourth in the last five competed, Alex Heffner finished with a 54-hole total of 10-under 206 to win individual medalist Sunday afternoon at Reunion Resort.

The three-day event was played on the 7,219-yard, Par 72 Nicklaus layout.

The Wildcats (865 | +1), who led wire-to-wire, carded a final round 300 to win by eight strokes over league-newcomer Loyola-Chicago (+9). VCU (+17) finished 16 back of Davidson, followed by George Washington (+23) and Richmond (+25).

Heffner (69-67-70 = 206 | -10), the only golfer in the field to record three straight rounds under par, became the ninth player in school history to win a conference title, and third (Jack Lang – 2017 | Mike Blasey – 2018) since the Wildcats joined the A-10 prior to the 2014 season.

To add to his already impressive playing resume, the junior from Harrisburg, N.C., was voted A-10 Player of the Year for a second straight season.

Heffer was joined on the all-conference team by sophomore Will Davis, who came home tied for fourth at 216 (68-74-74).

Playing in his final league championship, senior Brian Garrett also finished in the Top-10 for the Wildcats, placing tied for ninth at 3-over 219 (78-66-75). Ethan Hall (+11 | T-24) and Joshua Stewart (+15 | T-34) rounded out the Davidson scoring.

Along with its ninth (SoCon – 1954, 1960, 1966, 1967, 1968 | A-10 – 2018, 2021, 2022, 2023) conference crown in school history, Davidson will make its fourth NCAA Regional appearance as a team.

In eight Atlantic 10 Championship appearances, the Wildcats have captured four titles (2018, 2021, 2022, 2023), a runner-up and third place showing, while recording an average finish of 2.9.

Regional selections for the 2023 NCAA DI men’s golf championship will be announced on the Golf Channel at 1 p.m. ET on Wednesday, May 3, and shortly after that on NCAA.com.

2023 men’s golf regionals are May 15 – 17 at these sites:

  • Auburn University Club — Auburn, Alabama
  • The Cliffs at Keowee Falls — Salem, South Carolina
  • Eagle Eye Golf Club — East Lansing, Michigan
  • Bear’s Best Las Vegas — Las Vegas, Nevada
  • Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club — Norman, Oklahoma
  • The Institute Golf Club — Morgan Hill, California

Six 54-hole regional tournaments will be conducted to determine the 30 qualifying teams and six individuals not on those qualifying teams who will compete in the finals. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams will advance to the finals.
