ORLANDO, Fla. – The No. 6-seed Davidson women’s tennis team was defeated by No. 3-seed Massachusetts, 4-2, on Friday afternoon in Orlando, Florida.

Davidson put up a fight until the end despite falling behind early. The Wildcats dropped two of the three doubles pairings, but seniors Emma Heiderscheit and Franny Shea picked up the lone doubles victory with a 6-3 decision over UMass’s Danielle Hack and Anna Napadiy.

The Wildcats found themselves in a bigger hole after the Minutemen were able to take the No. and No. 5 singles match and make it 3-0. Daniela Porges erased the possibility of a sweep with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Mariya Krasakova in the third spot. Then Kavya Patel made it interesting when she pulled out a come-from-behind victory in the No. 4 singles match. Patel lost the opening set 6-2 before rattling off back-to-back triumphs 6-2, 7-5.

Davidson fought to the wire as Franny Shea and Josie Schaffer both sent their matches to three sets, but UMass came out on top in the No. 6 match.

The Wildcats end their season with an 8-13 overall record.
