At Tuesday night’s Davidson Town Board meeting the Mayor read the following proclamation in honor of the Davidson College Class of 2023. Go ‘Cats! Congratulations Class of 2023.

A PROCLAMATION

Honoring Davidson College Class of 2023

WHEREAS, The Town of Davidson is inextricably linked to Davidson College and was even formally established as the Town of Davidson College; and

WHEREAS, on May 14 more than 500 Davidson College seniors will cross the stage earning Bachelor of Arts or Science degrees at the college’s 186^th Commencement; and

WHEREAS, those members of the Class of 2023 came from 41 states, the District of Columbia, and 18 countries; and

WHEREAS, the diversity of the Class of 2023 makes us a better place, with 129 U.S. students of color and 47 international students; and

WHEREAS, that diverse group of students arrived in our town in August 2019 with the unbridled hopes and dreams of high school seniors ready to take on the world. Months later their first year would end abruptly at the outset the global COVID pandemic; and

WHEREAS, after a year and a half of remote and hybrid learning, these students came back and became an important part of our community. They have served as volunteers, interns, role models, and mentors – specifically making huge impacts on our nonprofits; and

WHEREAS, the ranks of visual and performing artists in the Class of 2023 have grown over the past 4 years. Artists of all types have shared their skills and talents with us, participating in art shows and performing in concerts on campus and the Town Green; and

WHEREAS, more than 100 scholar-athletes in the Class of 2023 are far more than players on intercollegiate sports teams. They have entertained us on the court, in the pool, on the field, on the course, on the mat; and on the track – all while excelling in the classroom; and   

WHEREAS, the members of the Class of 2023 are “Davidson smart” too. There are 62 new members of Phi Beta Kappa, a new Watson Fellow, two Goldwater Scholars, and a Truman Scholar; and

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rusty Knox, Mayor of Davidson and the Board of Commissioners, do hereby proclaim May 14, 2023, as Class of 2023 Day and urge all the people of the Town of Davidson to celebrate the accomplishments of this amazing class.
