Dear readers,

David Fleming

First, a hearty congratulations to Davidson’s own, David Fleming, on his new book, Who’s Your Founding Father? One Man’s Epic Quest to Uncover the First, True Declaration of Independence, timed perfectly for the anniversary of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence this weekend.

Dave’s book is a romp through the  legend that Thomas Jefferson plagiarized our nation’s Declaration of Independence from our very own Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence written a year earlier.

Find out for yourself what Dave’s donut-fueled research adventure uncovers. We’ve got signed copies that you can order from us here.

Read Asian & Pacific American voices

We join the Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution, and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in “paying tribute to the generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders who have enriched America’s history and are instrumental in its future success.” Learn more.

Hometown Hero

Then, during Memorial Day week we’re hosting retired U.S. Navy Commander Porter Halyburton whose fascinating story began when he was reported Killed in Action over North Vietnam in 1965.

For over a year, his community mourned his loss until receiving secret messages revealing that he was alive, imprisoned as a POW.

His new book, Reflections on Captivity: A Tapestry of Stories from a Vietnam War POW is a tribute to the friendships, creativity, courage, and humor that carried him through seven years of imprisonment.

Join us in welcoming Porter Halyburton back to his hometown on Friday, June 2nd at 3:00 PM in the auditorium at Davidson’s new Town Hall. Find more information and registration details here. This event is free and brought to you in partnership with our friends at Davidson Learns.

with gratitude,
