RICHMOND, Va. — Jacob Hinderleider homered, Henry Koehler drove in three runs and Davidson pitchers kept seventh-seeded Rhode Island quiet down the stretch in an 8-4 opening-round win in the Atlantic 10 Tournament at The Diamond Tuesday afternoon.

The No. 2 Wildcats improved to 30-22 overall, notching the program’s fourth 30-win season, and will meet either No. 3 Dayton or No. 6 George Mason at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Davidson trailed 3-0 in the first inning Tuesday, but the Wildcats quickly pulled even and later scored two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth to pull away.

With the score tied 4-4 in the seventh, Ryan Wilson and Michael O’Shaughnessy drew walks, and Koehler moved them over with a sacrifice bunt. Wilson then scored the go-ahead run on a Nick Calero groundout, and Hinderleider singled in O’Shaughnessy to make it 6-4.

Davidson extended its lead in the eighth when O’Shaughnessy singled in Jacob Friend and Koehler plated Michael Carico with a sacrifice fly.

Hinderleider’s solo home run came in the fourth and tied the game at 3-3.

Carico and Koehler singled in runs in the first, and Koehler singled in another in the fifth. Wilson had a game-high three hits.

Righthander Bennett Flynn (5-1) pitched the final four innings without allowing a hit and only surrendered an unearned run. He struck out four and walked two.

Brycen Champey (2 IP) struck out three and allowed just one hit after taking over for starter Will Schomberg (3 IP).
