by | May 24, 2023

David Hicks

November 20, 1959 – May 15, 2023

David was born on November 20, 1959, in Newport News, VA.  After graduation from Warwick High School, he began working at Sarah Bonwell Hudgins in VA. He later found his true calling by joining the lobby crews at McDonald’s in Asheville, NC and Smithfield, VA. Folks initially visited for the food, but after meeting David, they came for him. He was a former member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, Suffolk, VA; a long time member of First Presbyterian Church, Newport News, VA; and a current member of Davidson College Presbyterian Church. He participated in the Maloney Bible Class and Brindisi Bible Study Group.

David was an avid reader and studied everything from 1st Corinthians to First Ladies. He could tell you about the stars on screen, he cheered for his favorite football teams, and sang along to every song on the radio. His love of music, especially Michael Jackson, surely has him dancing in Heaven!

From the very first time you met him, to his very last days, David’s gentle spirit and infectious smile brought joy and unconditional love to all he greeted.

David was preceded in death by his loving Mother and Father, Dorothy Alexander Hicks and William Algernon Hicks and a sister, Mary Susan (Bebe) Hicks Hill.  He is survived by sisters Jean Rood (Larry) of Springfield, VA and Margie Utley (Wayne) of Davidson, NC, who David lived with for over 30 years. David was “Super Hero” to five nieces, Sharon Albright, Jennifer Groves (Garrick), Amy Utley (Susan), Leslie Cosentine (Lac) and Karen Nasser (Chris) and great nieces and nephews, Tyler, Katy, Ella, Cecelia, Matthew, Abby, Kate, PJ and great-great nephew Davis.

It has been said that God loaned us one of his angels when David was born, and we are all truly blessed to have shared in such an amazing life. He is now dancing in Heaven, between his mother and daddy, and singing at the top of his lungs.

To honor David’s memory, a  Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held at 2:00 p.m. June 3, 2023, at Davidson College Presbyterian Church. We invite everyone touched by David’s infectious spirit to attend and remember his wonderful life. A private interment at Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News, VA will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be forwarded to Gracious Living Adult Day & Health Care Center, 16630 Northcross Dr. #A, Huntersville, NC  28078 or Davidson College Presbyterian Church, Community Assistance Fund, PO Box 337, Davidson, NC 28036.

The Hicks Family have entrusted arrangements to Cremation Society of Charlotte
