Baseball Season Ends With A-10 Loss to Dayton
RICHMOND, Va. — The third-seeded Dayton Flyers scored six runs in the first inning and led from there in a 15-4 win over No. 2 Davidson in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament Thursday at The Diamond.
That closed the book on Davidson’s 2023 campaign, with the Wildcats finishing 30-24. It’s the program’s fourth 30-win season (2017, 2018, 2022).
The Flyers (25-33) advanced to face either No. 1 Saint Joseph’s or No. 5 Richmond in another elimination game Thursday night.
Dayton’s Paxton Tomaini hit a grand slam as part of the six-run first, and the Flyers took their lead to 8-0 after two.
Jacob Friend’s two-run home run in the eighth inning was his 11th blast of the year and his ninth in the last 12 games. Jake Wilhoit and Anthony Torreso also had back-to-back doubles to produce a run in the eighth.
Davidson loaded the bases in the third, fourth and fifth, but only produced a Wilhoit RBI-single in the fourth to get on the board. Wilhoit led the Wildcats with four hits.
With a walk in the third inning, Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Ryan Wilson reached base for the 54th consecutive game. Not only did the junior reach base — by hit, walk or hit-by-pitch — in every contest of the season; he also matched the school record set by Will Robertson in 2017. Wilson also singled in the fifth.
Starter Jacob Peaden (1-2) threw four innings and took the loss.
