Supreme Court College Admissions Decision

by | Jul 3, 2023

Commencement 2023 was Davidson President Doug Hicks’ first as Davidson’s 19th president.

Friends in the Davidson Community,

When a prospective student applies to Davidson, we look at their experiences – the influences in their lives that have shaped their perspective and understanding. As part of our personalized, holistic review of applicants, we do our best to get to know an applicant for what they will bring to Davidson and how they will benefit from that education as we prepare people for leadership and service in the world. The qualities that our community values, that our world needs, sometimes defy measure.

And each year, we build an extraordinary class of students who will learn from one another over four years at Davidson and across their lifetimes as members of the Davidson alumni community.

The decision today by the United States Supreme Court hinders our ability, and that of other colleges and universities, to fully evaluate applicants. It is not the outcome that we desired. We will study carefully the decision, which runs 237 pages with dissents, to understand how best to comply with the law, embody our educational values, and recruit world-class students to Davidson.

We remain deeply committed to cultivating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community at Davidson. We know that students and their families live in a society in which discrimination, including that based on racism, is still a harsh reality–and we fervently believe that education creates the context for overcoming inequalities and injustice. At Davidson, our students live and learn with one another, constantly interacting with a wide range of opinions and ideas and, in the process, developing humane instincts and disciplined and creative minds.

Davidson’s Admission and Financial Aid Office has for many, many years led a comprehensive process that reviews every student as an individual who will be part of a class that lives and learns together. Our deep and meaningful process–however we will necessarily adapt it–gives us hope that we can continue to recruit a class that reflects our nation and its promise.

We are grateful for your continued support of Davidson’s team and our educational mission.

Doug Hicks ’90
