Common Thread Theatre Collective: How to Make an American Son

July 21 @ 7:30 p.m.

Barber Theatre

Expanding on its nationally recognized first season in 2022, Common Thread Theatre Collective will produce “How to Make an American Son.” This brand-new play explores what happens when the American Dream collides with the reality of immigration and family. Honduran-born Mando built a successful cleaning business, and he has the means to pay for his son, Orlando’s, lavish high school lifestyle. Orlando is his teenage son – impetuous, restless, and smart. At 16 years old, he is openly gay and has the great fortune of having two parents who accept him fully. He is happily enjoying the fruits of his father’s labor but is embarrassed by his accent and his line of work. A note to patrons, this production is English, but as it tells the story of an immigrant family there is some Spanish dialogue interspersed.

Davidson Community Players: The Explorers Club

July 21 @ 8:00

Duke Family Performance Hall

London, 1879. The prestigious Explorers Club is in crisis: their acting president wants to admit a woman, and their bartender is terrible. True, this female candidate is brilliant, beautiful, and has discovered a legendary Lost City, but the decision to let in a woman could shake the very foundation of the British Empire, and how do you make such a decision without a decent drink? Grab your safety goggles for some very mad science involving deadly cobras, irate Irishmen and the occasional airship. Additional Performances: Sat, Jul 22nd, 2023 at 8:00 p.m.; Sun, Jul 23rd, 2023 at 2:00 p.m.; Thu, Jul 27th, 2023 at 8:00 p.m.; Fri, Jul 28th, 2023 at 8:00 p.m.; Sat, Jul 29th, 2023 at 8:00 p.m.; Sun, Jul 30th, 2023 at 2:00 p.m.

Been reading any manga or watching any anime lately? Come share with us what you’re reading and watching! We’re not a regular book club. We’re an “UnBook Club!” What’s an Unbook Club, you ask? We don’t all agree to read the same things. (After all, some like shojo more than shonen, or like the mecha genre more than the magical girls type. Some might even like both!) Here we all take turns sharing what we’re currently reading, give and ask for recommendations, and share our love of manga! We play games, watch anime, make crafts, and hang out. Join us every last Thursday of the month at 4:30 p.m. in the community room. Looking for some manga to read? Check out our catalog and place a hold, or come explore our graphic novel section in the branch. Find a link to our catalog by clicking here.
