Men’s Basketball vs. Maryland in Opening Round of Asheville Championship
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Davidson Wildcats will take on Maryland in the opening game of the 2023 Asheville Championship on Friday, Nov. 10 at Harrah’s Cherokee Center, the tournament announced Monday morning.
The third annual event will feature the Wildcats and Terrapins, who will tip off at 7 p.m. on ESPNU, along with Clemson and UAB, who will meet at 9:30 p.m.
Friday’s winning and losing teams will then meet Sunday, Nov. 12, with the third-place game set for 12:30 p.m. and the championship at 3 p.m. Both Sunday games will air on ESPN2.
The Asheville Championship will be Davidson’s eighth consecutive MTE (multi-team event), and the ‘Cats will meet Maryland for the 12th time in program history. The series dates back to the 1938-39 season, with the most recent matchup being an 82-70 Maryland victory in the first round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament.
The meeting with Maryland will feature a pair of second-year head coaches, as Davidson’s Matt McKillop returns to the helm after a 16-16 finish in his first season.
Maryland’s Kevin Willard led the Terps to a 22-13 campaign during his debut season. His Terps advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and ranked among the top-25 during the regular season.
