Field Hockey Hosts Queens Friday in Home Opener

The Wildcats host Queens for their season home opener Friday.

 

After splitting results on the season’s first weekend, the Davidson field hockey team will host cross-county foe Queens Friday evening in its home opener.

Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Carol Grotnes Belk Turf Field.

The Wildcats (1-1) are meeting the Royals (0-2) for the second straight season after Queens moved to Division I play a year ago.

In 2022, the Wildcats earned a 6-2 victory over the Royals in Charlotte.

LATEST ON THE ‘CATS
• Davidson topped Georgetown 3-2 in its neutral-site season opener last Friday, with the difference-maker being Hannah Merritt’s penalty stroke at the 41-minute mark.
• Two days later, the Wildcats lost 3-2 at Towson in a game decided by shootout.
Sib Naaktgeboren leads the Wildcats with two goals. She scored the game-tying goals in both contests as Davidson rallied to set the stage for tight finishes.
Celie Constantine and Sarah Minges have also scored goals, and Macy Curtis leads the Wildcats with two assists.

SCOUTING THE ROYALS
• Queens is 0-2 after a 6-0 season-opening loss at Saint Francis and a 7-0 defeat at Lock Haven.
• Returner Sydney Smith led the Royals with three goals and seven points a year ago.

ALSO THIS WEEKEND
• After facing Queens, the Wildcats will travel to Boone Sunday afternoon to meet Appalachian State.
• App State is 2-0 as it enters its Friday night home contest with Drexel.
• Last week, the Mountaineers earned 3-1 and 4-1 victories over Towson and Georgetown, respectively.
• Florine Koopman and Sophia Baxter have scored two goals apiece.
• The Mountaineers have won the series’ last two meetings, including 3-0 last year in Davidson.
