Field Hockey Rolls by Queens 7-1 in Home Opener
DAVIDSON — Abby Pompeo scored two goals and five other Wildcats scored as the Davidson field hockey team earned a 7-1 win over Queens Friday night at Belk Turf Field.
With the win in their home debut, the Wildcats improved to 2-1.
“I’m really pleased by the generation of attack we had today,” said Davidson coach Zoe Almquist. “I think it was a good team effort, with lots of intent to shoot, coming into the circle in dangerous spaces. That was really exciting to see. I also like how we’re really trying to look for the right passes.”
It was Pompeo who got the Wildcats on the board, scoring off a Sarah Grace Clifton pass with 4:26 left in the first quarter. Evie Lake then scored just 19 seconds before the period expired to make it 2-0, and a Macy Curtis goal in the second made it 3-0 at the break.
The Wildcats scored three times in a 5:38 span of the third — first from Adriana Risi, followed by Hannah Merritt and then Pompeo — to push the lead to 6-0. Clifton scored in the fourth to make it 7-0 before Queens’ Riley Iasiello spoiled the shutout with 1:09 to play.
Davidson finished with a 14-1 advantage in penalty corners and on top of a 25-3 shot count.
