GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Davidson men’s soccer team remained undefeated after they topped UNC Greensboro 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon. Denis Krioutchenkov scored the game-winning goal on a free kick in the 60th minute.
After play was postponed last night due to severe weather, the Wildcats made the trek up the highway for the second time in a little over 12 hours to take on the Spartans.
Wednesday’s action began as a heavily defensive affair as the two teams combined for a single shot in the first half. Things picked up in the second half starting with a chance from Baylen Young in the 51st minute. Then in 60th minute, the Spartans fouled the Wildcats just outside their own box to set up a prime opportunity for the ‘Cats.
Sophomore Denis Krioutchenkov stepped up for the free kick and delivered a perfect shot over the UNCG line of defenders that also skimmed off the crossbar before tucking itself inside the upper left corner of the frame. It was the Milwaukee native’s second goal of the season.
Playing from behind, the Spartans picked up their offensive urgency down the stretch. UNCG had just one shot in the first sixty minutes, but they cranked out five in the final thirty. The home team nearly tied the game in the 71st minute when a shot hit off the woodwork, but the Wildcats quickly cleared the rebound away.
Davidson’s back line held firm against UNCG’s late-game pressure and cleared away attacks by the Spartans in the final ten minutes.
Lou Liedtka got his third shutout victory of the season in goal as the Wildcats moved to 3-0-1 on the year.
