Matilda Collins – A10 Rookie of the Week

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Davidson freshman field hockey player Matilda Collins has been named Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

Collins, a Curry Scholar from Willingdon, England, is the first Wildcat honored this season. She totaled two goals and two assists in Davidson’s 1-1 weekend.

“Tilda is an absolute staple in our defensive unit and has been since day one of stepping onto our team,” said coach Zoe Almquist. “This week she asked me what else she could do to help the team, and I asked her to be a little more involved in the attack. She answered with this weekend’s performance. Tilda is a competitor, she plays big in the big moments and I can’t wait to see how she continues to grow with us here at Davidson. ”

Collins scored her first college goal against Richmond on Friday, as her strike at the 13:45 mark of the second quarter gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. She then assisted on Macy Curtis’s game-tying goal in the fourth quarter, helping to force overtime in the eventual 3-2 loss.

In Sunday’s 6-1 win over Lindenwood, Collins assisted on Davidson’s first goal of the day, a score by Abby Pompeo just 1:17 into the contest. Collins then scored the Wildcats’ third goal, which gave them a 3-0 lead 7:21 into the game.

Collins and the Wildcats return to play with a visit to VCU on Friday, Sept. 22.
