Field Hockey Falls 2-0 to Wake Forest

DAVIDSON — Wake Forest withstood an early barrage of Davidson threats, settled in and earned a 2-0 win in field hockey at Belk Turf Field Sunday afternoon.

The Wildcats (4-8 overall) put five shots-on-goal in the first quarter, but keeper Ellie Todd saved all of them for the Demon Deacons (4-5).

Brooke McCusker put Wake on the board, scoring after a Deacons penalty corner, with 4:34 left in the first half. Then Wake scored 2:13 into the second half when Nat Friedman took a long Faye Janse pass in from the left and finished.

Wake outshot Davidson 14-4 after the opening quarter to finish with a 14-9 advantage, though Davidson had an 8-6 edge in shots-on-goal. The Deacons finished with 11 corners to Davidson’s five.

Matilda Collins led all players with four shots-on-goal, while Macy Curtis, Liv Goeke, Ava Mickel and Sib Naaktgeboren had one apiece.

Keeper Genna Barge, making her first start of the year, finished with four saves.
