The Town of Davidson is pleased to present this annual event is a fall festival to celebrate the flavors of Davidson and will feature food and beverages from our great restaurants as well as music by Carolina Soul Band. Jetton Street between Clean Juice and Mine by Sandy will be blocked off to accommodate the event, but there is plenty of public parking at the Circles @ 30 for festival goers. Admission to the event is free. Local restaurants will offer tastes of some of their most popular menu items for a small fee.

Artist talk by Lola Flash, one of the very few Black Queer artists active in New York since the Aids crisis to the present. Their work, featured prominently in museum collections as MoMA, is currently on view at the Whitney and The Center for Black Visual Culture at NYU.

We are excited to partner with Crisis Assistance Ministry to welcome Matthew Desmond to Davidson College. In this landmark book, acclaimed sociologist Matthew Desmond draws on history, research, and original reporting to show how affluent Americans knowingly and unknowingly keep poor people poor. Elegantly written and fiercely argued, this compassionate book gives us new ways of thinking about a morally urgent problem. It also helps us imagine solutions. Desmond builds a startlingly original and ambitious case for ending poverty. He calls on us all to become poverty abolitionists, engaged in a politics of collective belonging to usher in a new age of shared prosperity and, at last, true freedom. A book signing will immediately follow the talk.

Sara Galletti (Duke University), “Stone Vaulting in the Pre-Modern Mediterranean” This talk will explore the history of a stone vaulting technique called stereotomy from a transnational, longue durée perspective across the Mediterranean from the third century BCE—when the oldest of known stereotomic vaults was built in the Sanctuary of Delphi—through the sixteenth and seventeenth century, when pioneering theoretical works such as those by Philibert de L’Orme (1514–70) and Alonso de Vandelvira (1544–1626) crossed the boundaries of the building trades and stereotomy became the focus of a broader intellectual debate about solid geometry.
