Prime Season Market

October 14, 2023

9 a.m. – 12 p.m., Rain or Shine! No pets please.

Shopping starts at the ringing of the market bell.

Hello DFM Shoppers,

We are back to Market this week! Today, one of our farmers said, “there’s lots of really good looking stuff this weekend. This is the sweet time of year when you can get the best of both seasons!  If it’s cool out I can make a soup with roasting up some of those root crops (beets, potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, etc.), or prepare some of those hearty greens. When it’s warm out, I go back to the salads and grilling sides (green beans, corn, tomatoes, etc.).  The best of both worlds!” Out of the mouth of a farmer! That says it all.

So come out to the Market on Saturday and not only pick up all your locally grown produce, but shop for locally raised and processed meats, chicken, pork, lamb, seafood, and eggs! Plus all the crafty and artisan goods like, mushrooms, breads, danishes, donuts, handpies, cookies, muffins, goat cheese, salsas, Italian sauces and spreads, pasta, milk, honey, plants, soaps, body scrubs, flowers, dog treats, kombucha, and much more!

New this week: Ginger at Down Mountain Nursery (formerly Rowland Row Farm) and Rainbow Carrots, Spinach and Fennel at Barbee Farms!

Right now is the very best time to eat! Summertime produce is still with us, and Fall foods are rolling in! Here are some new items to check out when you get to the Market: beets, October beans, rainbow colored cherry and grape tomatoes, baby mustard greens pesto, and caramel apple crisps. Yummy! Gather those summer veggies while you can – come January, you’ll be glad you did. Follow this article with 10 Ways to Preserve Seasonal Produce, Farm to Jar. This shows creative ways to utilize summer’s bounty, like shrub syrups, air drying, compound butters, pickling, freezing, fermenting, and more!

Be sure to mark your calendars for DFM’s Apple Day on Saturday, Oct. 28. More info below!

As you probably already know, our neighbors at the Davidson Fire Department are celebrating that they are six time older than we are. As DFM celebrates 15 years, the DFD is celebrating 90 years serving the people of the Town of Davidson.

No matter how you show up – we are just glad that you do! See you at the Market 🙂

  • Stimulate our local economy and aid in the preservation of farmland
  • Create opportunities for business incubation and micro-enterprise for farmers & vendors
  • Strengthen our local food system while reducing the carbon footprint
  • Foster social interaction among an economically, racially, and ethnically diverse shopper base

DFM History

It has been 15 years since a small group of Davidson citizens decided we needed a Farmers Market. I doubt even the most ardent fan of markets or the most optimistic could have imagined the Market we have today. With close to 40 vendors, an average of 1800 shoppers a week and strong community support we set a high standard for what a local, producer only market should look like. Saturday mornings are a cacophony of sights and sounds and smells and I delight in finding a few minutes to sit and take it all in. I love to watch the families introducing their children to fresh fruits and vegetables and piling carriages high with flowers or seeing a small hand reach up to touch a brightly colored pepper. I listen to vendors answering questions about how to best prepare okra or explaining about different types of mushrooms. Our vendors are passionate about their product because they produce it themselves and despite long lines and hot sun, they always seem pleased to be at the Market. It feels so good to see people listening to the music and placing tips in the can, and sometimes singing along. Maybe you are part of a group or a club or a team that would like to come out and help set up and enjoy the perks of fellowship and early bird shopping.

So come to shop or volunteer or both, and take some time to let all the special parts of the Market really sink in. It’s worth the time!
