Women’s Tennis played at the ITA regionals

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Davidson women’s tennis team concluded its time at the 2023 Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Regional Championships.

“We had some good wins at the Carolina Regionals” said head coach Susanne Depka. “It is one of the toughest competitions we face. Our region is comprised of some of the best schools in the country and having success there is a great accomplishment. We competed at a high level but also learned and grew in many ways during each match, which was even more impressive. I was proud of how we finished the weekend and look forward to bringing what we improved upon into the last tournament of the fall.”

The Wildcats showed light throughout the weekend with four athletes in attendance including Emma Heiderscheit, Savanna Kollock, Bryson Langford and Kavya Patel

Patel highlighted the opening day for the ‘Cats as she defeated an ACC opponent from Wake Forest 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 to open her draw. Patel would go on to battle a Furman competitor to a 4-6, 1-6 loss in the following round.

Thursday’s competition also saw Kollock and Langford with their second matches of the day by way of 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) and 6-1, 6-0 victories over UNC Asheville and South Carolina State respectively.

In doubles play, the pairing of Heiderscheit and Patel plated an outstanding match in the main draw against Furman having many chances to take the match but the duo were edged 8-6.

Langford and Kollock teamed up to play what was also an intense doubles match against ACC member Clemson, with the match lasting well into the night. The Davidson duo would end up taking a loss but not without a fight as they battled 8-7 with a narrow 11-9 tiebreaker loss that saw the ‘Cats have numerous match points.

Heiderscheit entered her singles draw Saturday morning where she matched up with a member of the reigning NCAA Champion UNC and the No. 1 see in the tournament, playing to an eventual 6-1, 6-0 loss.

Heiderscheit went on to round out the Wildcats’ performances at the Regional Championships later in the day when she claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win over Gardner-Webb. In her final time on the court, Heiderscheit fought hard but was edged 2-6, 6-7 (4-7) by Furman.
