“Silver-Haired” Gold Medalists
The Pines welcomed back seven residents who won gold, silver, and bronze medals at the recent North Carolina State Senior Games in Raleigh. This annual fall competition features seniors who placed first or second in their county’s competitions last spring.
Swimming competitors included Cathy Baily, Ed Boye, and Arlis Galloway, all of whom participated in multiple swimming events winning five golds, five silvers, and one bronze medal between them in their age groups. The swimmers missed their fourth partner, George Gabel, who could not attend the State games this year. Sylvia Holmes and Angie Grooms won first place in corn hole for their age division. Competing against a large group of participants, Bill Reinke won a medal in golf. And Adrienne Pedersen continued her State Gold medal win record of first place for two visual art categories: Watercolor and Acrylics.
On Saturday, December 2nd, these resident winners will be part of a Pines float during the North Mecklenburg Holiday Parade, thanks to the help of resident Joan Gardner. Since there’s room for nine on the float, two Pines County winners will join the State champions.
Last spring, fourteen residents participated and won in the Mecklenburg County Senior Games competition. Some elected not to go on to the State final. “The games are a lot of fun,” shared Cathy Baily. “It’s a great experience to compete against your peers. We hope more residents participate next year!”
