Caught Between the Rain – a Poem by Nora Hutton Shepard
Noise of gentle rain down
the gutter, sheeting down
the trellised garden wall,
cupping in the jonquils,
pouring on the iris still furled—
their colors only imagined now:
my draperies sheathe
this black glass night.
I am caught between the rain
and music from the speakers:
violin, piano, cello mourning.
Why do I hear the wild geese
you once loved so well?
flying beyond the line
of hemlock on the ridge?
Turn off the music.
Listen to the rain.
Can’t turn off the rain
to hear the music.
