Davidson Lands Conservancy Announces Leadership Opportunity

Paul Freestone, board president of the nationally accredited Davidson Lands Conservancy (DLC), has announced that after seven years of service, including four years as Executive Director, Dave Cable will retire from his position in the coming year. His retirement follows a 20-year conservation career in the Charlotte region.

DLC is a local land trust conserving land and natural resources in northern Mecklenburg, and parts of Iredell and Cabarrus Counties. DLC’s goals and mission center around four conservation pillars: conserving and stewarding land; preserving and enhancing the urban forest; expanding greenways and trails; and enhancing wildlife habitat.DLC logo

“Dave has brought his experience and passion to one of the worthiest causes I can think of, saving the natural environment that makes this spot in North Carolina such a beautiful and healthy place to live,” said Ed Harris, incoming board president. “He has strengthened DLC immeasurably.”

“This has been my dream job, honestly,” Cable said. “I’ve been doing what I love with the support of a strong board and staff, as well as scores of enthusiastic volunteers. Now I plan to volunteer myself, to plant trees, save more land, and help in any possible way, but also to spend more time enjoying our children and grandchildren.”

Board member Tom Shandley is leading the search for DLC’s next executive director.

“Leading the DLC is a great opportunity to guide a strong and mission-driven organization, led by a dedicated, collegial board and supported by hundreds of volunteers and donors,”  said Shandley. “Our committee is seeking a professional who combines passion for land and natural resource conservation with business acumen and an entrepreneurial spirit. The successful candidate will  be a strategic problem solver with collaborative leadership abilities and excellent communication skills.”

Board member John Griffith has chaired the Now & Forever Campaign, launched in 2022 with a goal of $1.75 million to support the continued growth of this 23-year-old regional land conservancy.

“It has been exciting to work with individual donors and corporate partners to secure the future of Davidson Land Conservancy—we expect to reach and surpass our goal in early  2024,” said Griffith. “We look forward to celebrating Dave’s remarkable tenure and the generous support of our community as we bring in new leadership.”
