Gallery Owner Kate Merrill’s New Book Set in Davidson

The Frame Gallery, once in Davidson

FRAMED: It’s Personal

Writers draw from experience, and publishers include a disclaimer on the copyright page that names, characters, places, and incidents are products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. In the case of FRAMED, I could almost disclaim the disclaimer because so much in the text reflects my reality. This book is near and dear because it is set in and around the Davidson art gallery on South Main Street that Susan Jennings and I designed and operated as a two-woman show for many years.

Jan’s Athena Gallery is identical to our Merrill-Jennings Galleries. The frame design room Jan and Shelly built is our frame room. Even the rooster painting Jan gives Shelly is inspired by one of our artists, Jodi John, and Aunt Charlotte’s lake house is our lake house. From the soda shop, to the college grounds, to the police station—FRAMED is personal.

Fortunately, Susan and I weren’t being stalked by a maniac rapist bent on revenge. Other than that, the tone and emotions in the book are my cherished memories—a joy to write.
