Davidson Resident, Natasha Marcus, Announces Run for N.C. Insurance Commissioner

by | Dec 19, 2023

State Senator Natasha Marcus at the 2023 Town of Davidson Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Ceremony.

North Carolina Senator Natasha Marcus (D-Mecklenburg), has filed to run for the office of North Carolina Commissioner of Insurance. The office is currently held by Republican Mike Causey.

Davidson will be in the new state senate district 37, which otherwise almost exclusively encompasses Iredell County.

In announcing her run, Marcus stated, “The job of Insurance Commissioner touches almost every North Carolinian and should be held by someone who is on the side of the people.”

Since 2019, Marcus has represented constituents in Senate District 41, a district that includes the north Mecklenburg towns of Davidson, Cornelius, and Huntersville, in addition to parts of Charlotte. She will continue to do so until after the 2024 election. New maps for N.C. General Assembly districts, as well as U.S. Congressional districts, were approved on October 23, 2023, by the North Carolina General Assembly. Most of Davidson will be in Senate District 37, a district that is based in Iredell County. The new maps will be used for the 2024 election. As a result, Marcus is now “double-bunked” with an incumbent Republican senator who lives in the same district, Vickie Sawyer of Iredell County.

Marcus has lived in Davidson since 2007. After the redistricting, she was encouraged by some to move out of Davidson and into a senate district in Charlotte that would be more favorable to a Democratic candidate. However, Marcus did not want to leave her home in Davidson, a place where she raised both of her children.

In addition to incumbent Commissioner Mike Causey, and N.C. Sen. Natasha Marcus, several other candidates have entered the race for Insurance Commissioner. On the Republican side, former state Rep. Robert Brawley and Andrew Robert Marcus have both filed to run. On the Democratic side, David Wheeler has also announced his candidacy.

The primary election for both parties is March 5, 2024. The general election is Nov. 5, 2024.

This is the full 2024 state senate district map as provided on the N.C. State Board of Elections website.
