Our LEARN Works afterschool students return from Winter Break on January 3. Our classroom volunteers from Davidson College will be on Break then, which means that we need fill-in classroom volunteers after school on a drop-in basis. Click here to help in our LEARN Works classrooms, weekday(s) from January 3-24. If you can’t join us in-person, you can still make an impact by helping us with some of the items on our Amazon wishlist: please click here to see our file cabinet and technology needs.

It’s hard to believe, but tax season starts next month. This year, the Ada Jenkins Center is hosting three program sites — in each of our service towns of Davidson, Cornelius, and Huntersville — for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE). VITA/TCE volunteers help neighbors with incomes of $60,000 or less prepare their taxes for free. Last year, our awesome volunteers prepared 309 tax returns for area families, with refunds totaling $287,774… an average return of $931 per family. We will be doing it all again, starting with training this month – and we need your help!  The following volunteers are needed:

Greeter/Screener – You greet everyone visiting the site to create a pleasant atmosphere. You screen taxpayers to determine the type of assistance they need and confirm they have the necessary documents to complete their tax returns. Tax law certification is not required for this position.  (great opportunity for older teens!)

Tax Preparer – You complete and successfully certify in tax law training, including the use of electronic filing software, to provide free tax return preparation for eligible taxpayers. There is a basic and advanced certification and previous knowledge of tax law is not required.  (Tax preparers will need to provide their own laptops.)

Marketing – If you like marketing, the skills to market tax-preparation locations to the community is greatly appreciated.

Administration – Help set up appointments, maintain schedules of volunteers, some data entry to system software, and help the program coordinator with various tasks.

Please contact our VITA team for more information.

Demand at our food pantry remains high after the holidays. We are greatly in need of feminine hygiene pads and adult incontinence underwear (such as Depends). Please check the food pantry webpage for updated information.

…As always, thank you for supporting our work and caring about the families we serve. Wishing you a beautiful New Year!
