Into My Heart – a poem for the New Year by Jody Seymour

Into My Heart
(a poem/prayer for the New Year)
My heart has been owned
by me since the
breath I took in
my unknowing
So possession has
been mine alone
since my birthing
But as the light rises
on this time of
pause and ponder
I wonder how well
I have done with
my gift so tightly
held in my
clutching hands
This year I open my
locked box of
memories and mistakes
and ask for something
new to my liking,
“Change my heart
O God.”
It has been mine for
lo these many years
and empty are my
hidden places
Come into my heart
and allow me
to see the wonder
of what I have often
missed with my limited
vision so prized
Convince my controlling
mind of the past
that my heart needs
something new
Then I will whisper
a word of thanks
to you who started
it all
