Warm up Your Brain with DavidsonLearns in January!

by | Jan 4, 2024

Start the year with friends old and new, learning in community with DavidsonLearns! There’s still room for you in a lifelong-learning course that begins in January. Browse the course list to find a course or two, check your membership, and register!

Just a few of the tempting classes available:

Hot Topics in Healthcare for Aging Americans

There’s a doctor in the house for this timely two-part course. Medical issues at the front of seniors’ mind this season are immunizations, including for Covid, shingles, and the rapidly spreading RSV. Dr. James Hallock, former dean of the medical school at East Carolina University, will poll the class on other immunizations you’d like to discuss. The second session will focus on the quality of physician training—here and abroad—and availability of care. This class will meet at The Pines beginning February 2.

Historical Origins of Modern Medicine

Learn how folks dealt with aches and pains—and worse—200 years ago, and how those practices developed over the decades to the advanced treatments and protocols we have today. Touching on the arts, humanities, and science, Dr. Joe Konan will trace an evolution that is sure to surprise, fascinate, and inform you. This class meets at Temple Kol Tikvah beginning January 11.

Born in the USA: American Popular Music in the 20th Century

Often called the American Century, the 1900s saw industrialism, international conflict, civil rights, and spreading our wings in Kitty Hawk before flying to the moon. Nothing tracks our nation’s 20th-century spirit like the music that evolved, decade by decade, to serve as the drumbeat of Americanism the world over. And there’s no one better to lead us on the journey than Rachel Stewart, popular and learned host from Davidson’s WDAV-FM, who brings the musical odyssey alive through the lens of cultural change. Sign up for this class, which will meet at Temple Kol Tikvah beginning January 16.

Perspectives on Traditional Music, Part II

More music! Enjoy two Davidson concerts armed with the expertise of Professor Bill Lawing, artistic director of Davidson’s Traditional Music Series, and the performers themselves. It’s a delightful combination of artistic insight and performance art from the classroom to the stage. This year’s artists are the Junior Appalachian Musicians and the Burnett Sisters, who mirror the early “sisters” groups of the ’40s and ’50s, grounded in a synthesis of folk, country, and swing. This class will meet at The Pines beginning on January 31.

Seneca Falls to Suffrage

It’s fitting to kick off a presidential-election year learning about the 72-year-long effort to gain women the right to vote. First demanded at the Seneca Falls convention of 1848, this constitutional right was not codified until the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. Professor Sally McMillen will guide you through the intense opposition to women’s suffrage and introduce the heroes who led this difficult fight through both the states and the federal government. This class meets at Davidson Friends Quaker Meetinghouse beginning on February 1.
