Davidson Community Players to Stage Landmark Musical “Fun Home”
DCP kicks off Main Stage season with 2015 Tony Winner
Davidson Community Players (DCP), Lake Norman’s largest theatre producer, is pleased to begin its 2024 Main Stage season with Fun Home, the Tony-winning 2015 Broadway musical based on the graphic novel by Alison Bechdel.
DCP Executive Director Steve Kaliski says, “Fun Home is one of the most beautiful, humane shows to emerge from Broadway in the last decade. It balances challenging content with a storytelling form that is brisk, funny, catchy, and profoundly moving. We cannot wait to share it with new and returning audiences.”
Fun Home Schedule:
February 22-March 10, 2024
Thursdays-Saturdays at 7:30 p.m.
Sundays at 2:00 p.m.
Tickets range from $18-23 and are available now at davidsoncommunityplayers.org or by calling 704-892-7953.
Armour Street Theatre is located at 307 Armour Street, Davidson, NC 28036, approximately 25 minutes from uptown Charlotte.
About Fun Home:
Trading in massive spectacle for the intimacy of a living room, Fun Home enthralled audiences with its premiere by showing how musical theatre can dig deep into the struggles and joys of coming of age. Narrator Alison, a queer woman, recalls her own childhood experiences of discovering her identity, reconciling those memories with the unresolved pain and mystery of her father’s suicide. A closeted gay man himself, Bruce raised an outwardly loving family that nonetheless stumbled when it came to honest connections with one another.
Fun Home was first performed in the Queen City by Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte in 2019. Several ATC alums reunite for this production, including director Danielle Melendez, production manager Carrie Cranford, stage manager Kathryn Harding, and set designer Chip Decker. Cranford, now with DCP full time, says, “Returning to Fun Home is hugely meaningful for all of us who worked on it at ATC. This will be an exciting way for the whole Charlotte theatre community to discover the amazing work happening in Davidson.”
DCP cautions its audiences to carefully weigh the content of the show before purchasing a ticket. Kaliski says, “Fun Home is rewarding viewing for ages 15 and up, but folks of all ages should be aware that the musical contains potentially triggering content related to suicide and homophobia, as well as allusions to sexual contact between an adult and minor.”
He continues, “That having been said, I can’t think of a more compassionate night at the theatre than hanging out in the Fun Home. This show means so much to so many people across the country and across the world, from the LGBTQ+ community to any young person dealing with the pains of growing up and to any couple who’s had good years and bad years. It’s a play about and for everyone.”
The cast includes Ashby Blakely, Bart Copeland, Bailey Fischer, Sierra Key. Allison Rhinehardt, Ann Schnabel, and Kel Wright. Rounding out the production team is Chelsea Retalic on costumes and Matthew Primm as music director.
Fun Home is the first entry in DCP’s five-show Main Stage Season. The remaining four will be 9 to 5: The Musical; Ripcord; The Humans; and Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley, which will play at Cain Center for the Arts in December. DCP also begins its youth season at the Cain later this month, with Frozen, Jr. running January 25-27.
