Wildcat Bryce Sanderlin

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Davidson College wrestling team battled the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs in SoCon dual action in Boiling Springs, N.C. on Friday night. The Wildcats won four matches on the night, two by pin, but fell 25-17.

Senior Bryce Sanderlin began the match with a tone-setting pin in three minutes and 20 seconds to give the Wildcats an early 6-0 lead.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs took the next four matches to go out in front, 11-6.

In the heavyweight match, senior Jake Fernicola found himself down 6-1 in the third period. But the Piedmont, South Carolina native flipped the script and got the pin with a minute and a half to go, putting the ‘Cats in front, 12-11.

Gardner-Webb earned six points in a win by forfeit at 125 to go back ahead, 17-12.

Freshman Brady Joling made his collegiate debut in impressive fashion and picked up an 11-6 victory in the 133-pound bout. During the match, Davidson was docked a team point for misconduct bringing the score to 17-14.

The home team earned a tech fall win at 141 to boost their lead to 22-14, then Tyler-Xavier McKnight took SoCon runner-up Zach Price to double overtime. The score in the 149-pound bout was notched at 1-1 after three periods and the first overtime. Price earned eight seconds of riding time to earn a narrow victory.

Sophomore Tanner Peake ended the night strong with a decisive 8-2 decision. It was his seventh win in his last eight matches, and he moved to 3-0 in conference duals.
