by | Feb 19, 2024

Wilson Perkins threw a strike for the first pitch of the 2024 season.

FRIDAYMichael O’Shaughnessy homered early and Davidson threatened late, but Morehead State claimed the baseball season opener 7-4 Friday evening at Wilson Field.

O’Shaughnessy’s two-run shot to right-center in the first inning served as Davidson’s emphatic first hit of the year and plated Jacob Friend, who had been hit-by-a-pitch.

But Morehead’s Colton Becker hit a solo shot in the third, and the Eagles scored two runs off three hits and two Wildcat errors in the fourth to move ahead. They extended their lead to 7-2 with three runs on four hits in the ninth.

The Wildcats did get the potentially winning run to the plate in the ninth, after four walks and another Friend hit-by-pitch. Jack Cotrone and O’Shaughnessy plated runs with bases-loaded walks to cut the deficit to three, but Morehead’s Matt Bettio forced a groundout to end it.

Tyler Douglas joined O’Shaughnessy with two hits, including a fourth-inning double.

On the mound, Wilson Perkins made his Davidson debut, throwing the first 3.1 innings. He struck out six before Matt Weber and Miles Jamieson combined for seven more strikeouts in the next five innings.

Michael O’Shaughnessy chalked up 6 hits for a .500 weekend batting average.

SATURDAYMichael O’Shaughnessy, Jake Wilhoit and Eli Putnam combined to drive in 10 runs, and Cooper Cavanaugh struck out nine in his college debut as the Davidson baseball team defeated Morehead State 16-5 Saturday at Wilson Field.

It’s the first win of the year for the Wildcats (1-1).

Davidson broke a 3-3 tie with four runs in the sixth via two-RBI doubles from O’Shaughnessy and Putnam. The Wildcats then added three runs in the seventh off a Wilhoit two-RBI single and a Putnam RBI-hit. They put the game away with six runs in the eighth thanks to four walks, two hit-batsmen and an Aidan Rice two-RBI single.

O’Shaughnessy finished with a game-high four RBIs, while Wilhoit was 4-for-4. Nick Calero had three hits, including two doubles.

On the mound, Cavanaugh set the tone early. He tossed 4.2 innings and struck out two batters in the first, second, third and fifth before handing the ball off to the bullpen.

Isaac Fix threw 3.2 innings and struck out five, before Will Banks recorded the final out, also on a strikeout.

SUNDAY — Davidson infielder Eli Putnam hit a home run to highlight Sunday’s series finale, a 6-3 loss to Morehead State.

After Saturday’s win, the Wildcats exit the first weekend of the season with a 1-2 record.

Putnam’s first career blast was a solo shot into the trees in right-center in the second inning and cut Morehead’s early lead to 4-2.

The Eagles’ lead grew to 6-2 by the ninth, and Davidson threatened in its final at-bat. Putnam singled and then scored on a Tyler Douglas one-out double. But Morehead closed it out from there, keeping the potentially tying run on deck.

Wildcat Michael O’Shaughnessy had two hits, including a double in the eighth.

Ryan Feczko threw the first 2.2 innings and left with the 4-2 deficit. Brycen Champey pitched the next 4.1 innings before Jason Ban made his college debut with two scoreless, hitless innings.
