DAVIDSON, N.C. – Fourteen Wildcats wrestled unattached at the Wildcat Open in John Belk Arena on Sunday. Ian McGehee, Dylan Smith, and Dan Yetsick all placed to lead Davidson in the team’s final event of the regular season.

In total, 11 teams attended the event and 89 wrestlers were entered.

McGehee, a freshman from Germantown, Tenn., took down NC State’s Aaron Faison, 7-3, in his first match. He also picked up a 7-3 decision over UNC’s Marcus Murabito to earn a spot in the 165-pound final. McGehee dropped the championship bout to NC State’s AJ Kovacs to take second place on the day.

Dylan Smith finished third in the round-robin 197-pound division. Smith topped App State’s Gunnar Pool, 5-4, by scoring all five points in the final period. The Newton native got an escape with 54 seconds left then got a takedown seven seconds later to come back for the win.

Senior Dan Yetsick took fourth place at 157 pounds to finish off his Davidson career. Yetsick got a first-round pin over Gardner-Webb’s Hunter Jones before falling in the semifinals. Yetsick moved on to the third-place match via forfeit after being paired against teammate Noah Frack. Yetsick got a third-period takedown to cut the score to 4-3, but an escape by UNC’s Cullen Kane was the difference despite a last-second takedown attempt.
