Thank You for Affirming Our Steadfast Commitment to Ukraine

by | Feb 29, 2024

Halyna Rutushna’s performance at the Davidson for Ukraine event held on Feb. 24, 2024.

Many thanks to the 100+ community members who attended the Davidson for Ukraine/Ukrainian Congress of America (D4U/UCCA) luncheon on 2/24/24 in the Davidson College Presbyterian Church Congregation House. The day marked exactly two years since the unprovoked invasion by Russia of Ukraine and celebrated the determination and sacrifice of Ukrainian citizens to maintain their independence and their democracy.

Luncheon organizer Aimee Symington began the program with a video capturing the many gatherings of D4U over the last two years, which can be viewed here: D4U. Speakers included Davidson College Professor Amanda Ewington, who provided a historical and cultural context for Russia’s war on Ukraine, and Sergiy Mysyk of UCCA, who shared personal anecdotes from friends currently fighting on the Ukrainian front.

Former Ukrainian Supreme Court Justice Volodymyr Mazurok recited a poem by Taras Shevchenko, and Galyna Ratushna, who arrived a year ago from Kyiv, played several violin pieces including “Prayer for Ukraine.”

Motria Procyk thanked the many D4U volunteers and donors as well as Davidson College for supporting four Ukrainian students this year and for its programming on Ukraine. She also thanked Davidson College Presbyterian Church (DCPC) for administering the D4U fund and for providing the luncheon venue. She asked guests to call the office of Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (tel: 202-225-4000) to encourage the passage of House Bill HR815, which would provide military aid to Ukraine. DCPC Pastor Robert Alexander closed the program with a prayer.

We are grateful to all who attended. Lunch ticket sales and other contributions totaled $4,700, which will be used towards the purchase of medical equipment and emergency vehicles. Guests included six families who recently fled from Ukraine due to the war. Our deepest thanks to all who support Ukraine during this challenging time.
