Men’s Tennis Splits A-10 Matches

by | Mar 5, 2024

The unseasonably warm weather made for great outdoor tennis for the Wildcats.

Monday – After Duquesne took the doubles point, the Davidson men’s tennis team was able to battle back in singles competition on its way to a 4-2 victory over the Dukes Monday on the Davidson Tennis Courts.

“It wasn’t our best day in doubles today,” said head coach Drew Barrett. “We had to dig deep and get it done the hard way. Duquesne battled hard and we had a few breaks go our way in the end.”

With the Atlantic 10 victory, the Wildcats move to 5-5 overall while improving to 2-1 in conference competition. The Dukes record moves to an identical 5-5 overall and 1-2 in league play.

Duquesne started the day off strong, securing the doubles point with victories at No. 1 (6-0) and No. 3 (6-1) leaving the No. 2 court unfinished as Nico Pinzon and Udday Singh were leading 5-1.

Maxwell Kachkarov, on court four, cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win before Pinzon kept his momentum into singles play with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph in the No. 6 spot for a second Davidson team point. Sebastian Carpio Moran battled to a first competitive 7-5 first-set win before stealing a clean 6-0 second set.

Juan Camilo Perez Gongora, who has found great success as the ‘Cats No. 2 man and improves to 8-2 in singles action, picked up a three-set win. Perez Gongora lost the first set 7-6

Davidson will hit the road when they travel to O’Fallon, Ill. for a pair of A-10 contests first against Saint Louis March 8 at 6 p.m.

Saturday – Richmond won two straight doubles matches to take the doubles point before holding the Davidson men’s tennis team to two singles wins on the way to a 4-2 loss for the ‘Cats Saturday at home.

“It was a tough loss today,” said head coach Drew Barrett. “Doubles ended up being the difference maker. We are competing hard, but we need to play the key points with more confidence. We have another tough conference match on Monday and I’m looking forward to us responding well.”

The Atlantic 10 loss moves the Wildcats’ overall record to 4-5 and their league mark to 1-1.

Udday Singh and Nico Pinzon were up 5-4 in the No. 2 spot of doubles action but were unable to finish as the Spiders picked up 6-1 and 6-4 wins on courts one and three respectfully.

Richmond earned two additional team points with wins in the No. 4 and No. 5 spots however, Juan Camilo Perez Gongora earned his seventh singles victory of the season, and the first team point of the day for Davidson, by way of 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 triumph on court two. Pinzon followed suit by forcing a three-set win in the No. 6 spot (3-6, 6-4, 6-4).

On court one, Singh dropped the first set 6-2 before battling back to a 7-5 second set in order to push three. The Spiders top man would go one to take the third set in order to secure the fourth team point.

Davidson will continue A-10 action 11 a.m. Monday when Duquesne arrives at the Davidson Tennis Courts.
