Baseball Road Game at No. 21 South Carolina Wednesday

The ‘Cats travel to Columbia, SC to take on the Gamecocks on Wednesday.

 

A clash with nationally ranked South Carolina is next on the Davidson baseball schedule.

The Wildcats and No. 21 Gamecocks will play Wednesday afternoon in Columbia, S.C., with first pitch set for 3 p.m. at Founders Park.

It’s the Wildcats’ only matchup with an SEC opponent this year and their first since meeting the Gamecocks in 2021.

It’s also the second ranked opponent the Wildcats will face this season, following a visit to No. 12 Duke on Feb. 27.

LATEST ON THE ‘CATS
• Davidson is 4-7 following its weekend series with Penn State.
• The Wildcats won the series opener 14-2 in seven innings, then lost both games of Sunday’s doubleheader.
• Wildcats Eli Putnam, Michael O’Shaughnessy and Jake Wilhoit are leading the way at the plate, and all have hit a team-best three home runs.
• Putnam, an infielder, leads the team with a .378 average and a 1.176 OPS and has driven in 10.
• O’Shaughnessy, also an infielder, is hitting .368 with a 1.115 OPS and a team-high 15 RBIs.
• An outfielder, Wilhoit is batting .333 with a 1.112 OPS and 11 driven in.

SCOUTING SOUTH CAROLINA
• The Gamecocks are 8-3 as they get set to host The Citadel on Tuesday.
• Outfielder Dylan Brewer is hitting .500 (17-for-34) with a 1.205 OPS, including a .617 on-base percentage. He has driven in 11 runs.
• Infielder/outfielder Ethan Petry is hitting .333 and leads the team with a 1.316 OPS (.778 slugging) and five home runs.
• Infielder/catcher Talmadge LeCroy is hitting .306, and catcher Cole Messina has four home runs and 12 RBIs.

SERIES HISTORY
• The Davidson-South Carolina series dates to 1902, Davidson’s first season.
• The Gamecocks lead it 48-24.
• Davidson won the teams’ most recent meeting on March 7, 2021.
• That night, the Wildcats built a 5-1 lead early, and Trevor Candelaria hit a late home run to cap a 9-3 win over the 16th-ranked Gamecocks.
