Davidson Branch Library: Community Read – Healthy Snack Choices with Measuring Up

March 15 @ 3:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Davidson Branch Library

Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, the Town of Davidson, and Main Street Books presents an afternoon drop-in program featuring information about healthy snack and lifestyle choices and a make-your-own snack mix bar on Friday, March 15th from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm. Students can drop by the Green in front of Davidson Library to enjoy community and food around the themes of friendship present in Measuring Up by Lily LaMotte.

Community School of Davidson: Little Shop of Horrors

March 15 @ 7:00 p.m.

CSD Art Space – 404 Armour Street

Flowers are starting to bloom all over Davidson, but there’s one special plant that’s taken root in the black box theatre of Community School of Davidson. Audrey II, one of the stars of the beloved musical Little Shop of Horrors, is in full bloom. A campy show with a cult-like following, Little Shop of Horrors features a nerdy florist who seizes his opportunity for romance and success via a man-eating plant (Audrey II), who always has an appetite. The cast of 25 includes some fresh faces, as well as CSD seniors Griffin Small (Seymour) and Garret MacIntyre (Orin Scrivello, DDS and Audrey II), who have done 15 shows together. Last seen in CSD’s productions of Into the Woods and Shrek, this dynamic duo is always a pleasure to watch.

 

Hudson Sellers, Piano

Join Hudson Sellers as he performs his senior piano recital. A student of William Fried, Hudson will be performing pieces that highlight his time at Davidson College. The program will include a few short pieces ranging from the Baroque to the Impressionist periods, and will finish with one of Hudson’s all-time favorite Beethoven sonatas, full of stormy and dramatic energy. Free and open to the public.

A returning crowd favorite event, Charlotte’s own old-time, bluegrass, and folk music stars Jon Singleton and Jon Hill will perform a concert of Irish American music to celebrate the heritage of old St. Patrick! Fiddle and clawhammer banjo meet mandolin and guitar. There will be plentiful songs and brisk, bonny dance tunes that will set your feet tapping! Admission is free, but tickets are required. This program will be provided by Davidson library staff. Please check in with library staff beginning at 9:00 am on the day of the Storytime – the first 12 babies and their caregivers are able to attend. Babies experience brain stimulation through language and socialization. Engage your little one with new sights and sounds through books, songs, and rhymes.

ReadDavidson welcomes Dr. Joseph Ewoodzie Jr., Davidson College Associate Professor of Sociology and Vann Professor of Racial Justice to the Town Hall and Community Center for a public speaking event appropriate for community members.  Drawing from his book, Getting Something to Eat in Jackson: Race, Class, and Food in the American South, Dr. Ewoodzie will discuss African American life in today’s urban South, exploring the complex interactions of race and class and how food can be the ultimate connector.

 

The Sheng Player: A British/Chinese Mixed Family’s Live Performance and More

March 18 @ 7:30 p.m.

This fun-loving British/Chinese mixed family from London will bring Davidsonians a rare blast! Mr. Yi Guo is a player of the sheng, an ancient Chinese musical instrument dating back to 1100 BCE. His work has been featured on over 200 movies, including The Last Emperor. Accompanying him to Davidson will be his English wife Amanda and their son, Toto Guo, who is an international model and actor splitting his time between China and the UK. Come enjoy the therapeutic sheng music, hear their dramatic bittersweet East-West stories, and watch the mega-hit short documentary, and feel the father-and-son group’s Chinese humor and the mother’s English reserve.No tickets required. Acclaimed Dulcimer Artist Bing Futch

The Davidson College Physics and Music Departments and the Davidson Arts and Creative Engagement (DACE) office are proud to welcome back acclaimed dulcimer artist Bing Futch to Tyler-Tallman Hall. Using the Appalachian mountain dulcimer, Native American flute, ukulele, and a looper, Bing celebrates traditional and modern music with passion, humor, and boundless energy. He continues to produce Dulcimerica, a video series on YouTube that’s been viewed by millions of people worldwide and is currently in its 16th year. Admission is free*, but tickets are required. The importance of submerged landscape research for understanding Pleistocene peoples in the New World.” Perhaps most people think of shipwrecks when underwater archaeology is mentioned, but numerous formerly-terrestrial sites have survived drowning in our freshwater lakes and rivers and on our continental shelves. These sites can even be better preserved than their dry counterparts, and in some cases they can help us answer some of the most pressing questions about people in the past.

The US Supreme Court Wades into the 2024 Election: What role does the Supreme Court play in elections, and what role should it play? This election year has brought the court unprecedented legal issues that could affect electoral outcomes. Literary editor Alice Murphy sets out to discover the familial secret that binds her to a young writer just back from World War II. Gabrielle Bell has contributed to The New Yorker, The Paris Review, McSweeneys, The Believer, and Vice. Her first full-length graphic memoir, Everything is Flammable, was named one of the best graphic novels of 2017 by Entertainment Weekly, Paste Magazine, and Publisher’s Weekly. Her comics have been selected for Best American Comics nine times. Her most recent work, Career Shoplifter, is a collection of comics about and drawings of New York City cafe life. She lives in Brooklyn, New York.

 

Dean Rusk Lecture: The Middle East and North Africa – Development Challenges and Opportunities

David Bruns is the Acting Deputy Assistant Administrator (DAA) for the Middle East Bureau overseeing development assistance to Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon. He is a career member of USAID’s Senior Foreign Service, and has served tours in Uganda, Jordan, Mali, Afghanistan, Tanzania and Senegal. Prior to joining USAID, he was an economist at the World Bank for ten years. Mr. Bruns has a Master of Science in Agricultural Economics from North Carolina State University and a Bachelor’s degree (English major) from Davidson College. Event is FREE and open to the public!
