Davidson Housing Coalition Announces New Project to Add Rental Units at Creekside Corner
Davidson Housing Coalition (DHC) will launch a renovation and redevelopment project later this spring that will add 3-4 new affordable units at its Creekside Corner Community in Davidson. The units will serve residents whose incomes are 80% or less of area median income. The project will also include a community room space for programming and use by residents. The project represents the first construction project for DHC since it broke ground in 2015 on affordable rentals that are reserved for veterans in the Creekside community.
“We are both determined and delighted to reinvigorate our efforts to bring new affordable rentals to the Davidson market,” said Connie Wessner, DHC’s executive director. “The need in our Town has never been greater, and we feel a distinct responsibility to continue to lead the way as a citizen-driven and -supported organization.” She underscored that DHC has been the Town’s most active developer of affordable rentals since 2000. “We take immense pride in the ground-breaking role we’ve played for a generation in shaping the Town’s pursuit of affordable housing. And we understand the long-term obligation that goes hand-in-hand with the initial excitement of building and offering new homes for rent.”
DHC’s newest project will unfold at the same time the organization begins a program of capital improvements to update whole house systems and interiors at The Bungalows. “More exciting announcements are on the horizon,” promised DHC Board Chair Margaret Martens. “We have initial commitments from foundational sponsors for the capital improvements project and will roll out opportunities for the larger community to lend its support this Spring.” Martens indicated that a planned transition to consolidate and improve property management functions in its three affordable Davidson communities is progressing ahead of schedule. “That important step forward affords us an even earlier opportunity than we’d expected to move ahead with our goals for community improvements and expansion efforts.”
DHC has also been a central player in a long-unfolding deal that will add eight units of affordable housing to the townhome project now under construction by developer Taylor-Morrison at the former Hoke Lumber site. According to the current schedule, the first unit will become available in late Spring. “We worked for three years in partnership with the Davidson Community Foundation and the Town to incorporate those units in the project, and we are proud of the resources we were able to bring to the table that helped position those units effectively within the affordable inventory,” said Wessner.
Additional details on the new construction at Creekside Corner and the Bungalows 2.0 projects will be available in the coming months.
