Sunday – The Davidson women’s tennis team went undefeated over the weekend as they swept non-conference competitor Lees-McRae 7-0 Sunday on the Davidson Tennis Courts.

“It was a bit of a slow start for us regarding attitude and intensity on and off the court,” said head coach Susanne Depka. “We managed to secure all three doubles matches, but honestly didn’t deserve them. The entire team turned it around after the doubles and became a unit and one as a team. I am proud of them for responding well and picking up in the singles matches. They competed well and stayed focused even when it was tough at times. They will need to be loud and intense and do what they did in singles today to be successful against a strong UMass team on Thursday.”

The second win of the weekend pulls the Wildcats overall record to 9-4 while extending their winning streak to four, including seven wins when hosting a match.

The ‘Cats took the doubles point to open the day, with all three pairs earning wins including Kavya Patel and Dani Porges on court one (7-5), Emma Heiderscheit and Olivia Hooper on court two (6-3) and Savanna Kollock and Bryson Langford on court three (6-3).

Singles action saw numerous courts jump out to a strong start in favor of Davidson. Langford grabbed the first singles point for the ‘Cats after picking up her third straight win in singles action courtesy of a 6-1, 6-1 triumph on court four. In her fourth singles match of her rookie season, Charlotte Calderwood finished after Langford in similar fashion with a 6-3, 6-1 win of her own in the No. 6 spot.

Patel, who has not lost in singles action since Feb. 11, extended her unbeaten streak to six matches after taking a 6-2, 6-3 win in the No. 3 position while also clinching the match for the Wildcats. Ines Roti, who also continues a strong debut season, fought back from going down early on the way to a 7-5, 6-1 court five victory. Kollock followed suit with a 6-1, 7-5 win on court two.

Porges, in her first No. 1 match of the season, took the opening set 6-3 before finding herself up 5-2 in the second and dropped a pair to move the set to 5-4. However, the junior powered back to a 7-5 second-set win to complete the Wildcats’ sweep.

Davidson will step back into Atlantic 10 action when it hosts UMass to the Davidson Tennis Courts 3 p.m. March 21

Saturday – The Davidson women’s tennis team improved its winning streak to three straight contests Saturday when it defeated non-conference opponent Radford 6-1 on its home court.

We started off strong winning two of the doubles matches,” said head coach Susanne Depka. “We did a lot well in the doubles including working on coming forward and hitting holes. Emma and Livy had a tough battle at No. 2, taking their match to a tiebreaker. Singles was great across the board today with everyone doing a great job using their tools to help them stay present and focusing on the things they can control and working towards getting one degree better, which helped them become more successful. I hope the team can continue with this mindset and improvement into tomorrow’s match.”

Saturday’s win improves the ‘Cats overall record to 8-4 while in home matches alone, the Wildcats have found great success and are currently 6-2.

The undefeated doubles pairing of Kavya Patel and Daniela Porges continued with their winning ways on court one, earning a 6-2 triumph. Sophomore and Rookie combination Savanna Kollock and Bryson Langford battled in the No. 3 spot for the Wildcats, taking a 7-5 win and the team point.

Emma Heiderscheit and Olivia Hooper put up a tremendous fight to try and sweep the doubles action on court two, but came up just short with a 7-5 loss after falling in the tiebreaker 7-4.

Davidson continued to roll through singles action with two-set victories on courts two through six by way of wins from Kollock (6-0, 6-3), Porges (6-1, 6-4), Patel (7-5, 6-1), Langford (6-2, 6-1) and Ines Roti (6-2, 6-3) respectively. Heiderscheit in the No. 1 spot fought for the singles sweep, getting out to a 6-0 win in the first set before being defeated in the final two (2-6, 0-6).

Davidson will continue the weekend with another non-conference match against Lees-McRae 1 p.m. Sunday on the Davidson Tennis Courts.
